Burnout Revenge

September 10th 2001 12:01 PM (EST)

I walk along the sidewalks of Los Angeles, California as the air smells fresh
With the smell of motor oil and exhaust puffing out of cars as they drive past me. My name is Kody McCullough but my friends call me Coco for short. I live in an old unmaintained house with green paint shading off and roaches eating the inside of the walls. I moved out of my parents’ house when I was fourteen and I have been wandering the streets looking for jobs since then. My parents have never approved or supported my love of cars. I believe they are still thinking about how my uncle Wally died in a 54 car pile up on the I-140 San Diego Expressway in 1955.

I look down while resting my hands in my warm ragged hole pockets kicking an old Pepsi soda can as I walk down the old cracked concrete sidewalk. I finally walk past Amigo’s Tires Auto Shop and I turn around. I walk onto the parking lot of the auto shop while drills and fluent Spanish comes from the furries changing the tires on the cars. I push the scratched glass door open and the door chime rings. I walk up to the counter looking at my best friend German Shepherd Hybrid Diego.
“What do you want puta?” he says in a Mexican accent.
“I was wondering if you could give me some used tires for your old pal?” I respond looking at him with a smile on my face.

“I don’t do business with drug dealers like you, alright? If you want some tires go get some at a High Crime Alley Way,” he says growling at me.
“Fine, fine, fine… I won’t bother you anymore, but how am I gonna tell your wife how you cheated on her a bunch of times?” I say. Diego slams his fist on the counter as I have my back turned. “Ok, fine, I’ll give you some tires man, just don’t tell my wife please?” he whines with his ears going down. I turn around looking straight at him, “Ok, yeah, sure, just give me some tires alright?” Diego walks from the counter to another scratched glass door and he opens it. I followed him while he walked in the garage filled with big stacks of tires.

I smell gasoline and motor oil inside the garage.
“Jesus, what is that smell?” I say with my nose pinched with my fingers.
“That’s the smell of sweet cash.” he said with a smirk on his face. We arrive at the back of the garage where a white trailer has workers unloading the tires inside. Diego walks over to the white trailer.

“Hey guys, how are my favorite workers doing?” the white furry wolf with long silver hair and light yellow eyes would turn around with dark smudges of motor oil on her cheeks “Not good sir…” she said in a serious voice.

“Well how about you show my best friend Kody here of the new Goodyear tires we have in stock?” Diego. She rummages through the group of tires and she grunts as she lifts up a GoodYear tire.
“Here they are, they just came in yesterday.” she said with a smirk. I looked at the GoodYear tire
“I’ll take it.” Diego looked at me with a smile. I pull out a stack of $50 dollar bills tied with a rubber band.
“Will this be enough?” I ask. Diego snatched it out of my hand and shoved it into his pocket. “Thanks for buying from Amigo Tires.” he said as his golden front teeth shine in the sizzling sun.

10 minutes later three other workers were rolling the tires off the cracked parking lot of Amigo’s Tires. I roll the GoodYear tire onto the sidewalk looking forward. A 1999 white Ford Panel van parked on the side of the curb with its hazard lights blinking. The driver opens the squeaky door and climbs out of the interior. The furry animated shark wearing a black t-shirt and baby blue ripped shorts slammed the driver side door shut and walked towards the rear end of the van. He grabs a key out of his pocket and slides the key into the key slot on one of the doors. He opens both doors and looks at me.

“Hey buddy, my name is Brian. I need your phone number and address please.” says the shark. I look at him.
“Ok, sure.” I respond. I pulled out an index card with my phone number and address on it. “Thanks man I’ll call you when I get to your house, alright?” Brian says. I smile at him.
“Ya, alright man.” I shake his hand and lift one of the GoodYear tires up with a grunt and placed it into the inside of the back of the van. Brian got back in his 1999 Ford Panel van and drove off. A cloud of exhaust and oil would make my lungs weak with coughing and make gasp for air. Then I heard shouting voices from the workers

“Hey come back! We did not load up the other three tires!”
The van hits a pothole and then both doors swing open in a flash. The tire flies out of the back of the van, bouncing onto the street like a bouncing beach ball rolling into oncoming traffic. A 1998 silver Toyota Corolla sees the bouncing tire and slammed on its brakes, grinding it’s tires against the pavement. A 2000 Ford Crown Victoria Taxi loses control, then hits the rear end of the silver sedan. I look, eyes wide open in amazement, feeling the sweat against the back of my neck, in the beating, bright sun.
